Functional solutions for paper-based flexible packaging
From 7–13 May 2026, interpack will take place at Messe Düsseldorf, Germany. Visit our team in Hall 7, Level 0 – Stand A02B to discuss your requirements for functional packaging coatings, water-based adhesives, and hot melt adhesives.
At Paramelt, we continuously push the boundaries of sustainable packaging solutions without compromising on performance. At interpack 2026, we will demonstrate how our advanced coating and adhesive technologies enable smarter material choices, helping improve functionality while supporting the transition to more sustainable packaging concepts.
UPM and Paramelt introduce a bio-based food packaging concept
Flexible packaging converters are increasingly asked to deliver paper‑based food packaging that meets demanding functional requirements, without disrupting existing production processes. Together with UPM Specialty Materials, Paramelt has co‑developed a coated barrier paper concept designed specifically with industrial converting in mind.
The solution combines UPM Solide™ Lucent or UPM Prego™ barrier base papers with Paramelt Aquavate™ Bio SB 2383, a water‑based, bio‑based PHA heat‑seal coating. The result is a paper structure that delivers strong grease resistance, reliable heat‑sealability, and good hot‑tack performance. The overall structure is certified recyclable1 and individual components are certified for home compostability2,3.
Aquavate™ Bio SB 2383 is engineered for standard industrial coating methods, including gravure‑based processes, and supports low coating weights to help maintain runnability and efficiency on existing converting and packaging lines. This makes the concept suitable for bakery, fast‑food, and convenience applications where consistent sealing and grease protection are critical.
1 The demonstrated packaging materials are certified recyclable according to Cepi/ 4evergreen v.2
2 UPM barrier base papers are certified as industrially (EN13432:2000) and home (NFT51-800:2015) compostable
3 Aquavate™ Bio SB 2383 is a water-based dispersion formulated entirely with biodegradable ingredients, of which 90% is biobased, certified home compostable PHA; In house testing based on modified ISO 20200 has shown that UPM paper combined with Aquavate™ Bio SB 2383 meets the disintegration requirement of home compostability protocols.
